Dr. Kevin McNamee’s Story
Dr. Kevin McNamee and his wife Kathryn are long-time resident of Thousand Oaks. Dr. McNamee is an observer and speaker at city council meetings. Dr. McNamee wishes to serve this special city as a citizen-politician by continuing his 30 years in business though his established clinical practice and community college teaching while helping the city navigate public policy development about affordable housing, taxation reduction, opioid abuse, traffic congestion, water treatment and sustainability.
As a Thousand Oaks businessman, healthcare professional and community college instructor, his desire is to serve our wonderful city by bringing innovative ways to make government more efficient, lower taxes, promote job growth, and reduce business killing regulations. The city is facing significant challenges when financing pension debt, business closure, street repairs, traffic congestion, affordable housing and water availability.
A significant part of his platform as a Thousand Oaks Council Member will be transparency and open communication with the people. Dr. McNamee feels that solutions to the city’s many challenges will come from the people.
Dr. McNamee is an instructor at Ventura College in the Water Science Department where his students are trained to work in the city water treatment plants preparing the water we drink. He is a member of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) for community college instructors.
During my run for city council in 2018, it became very clear that Thousand Oaks and Ventura County are extremely vulnerable to running out of drinkable water in such an earthquake scenario.
My call for a meeting with the Manager of Calleguas Municipal Water District and Thousand Oaks Project Manager about our city vulnerability in such a situation was agreed to.
We discussed the following and came to a solution.
- Ventura County and Thousand Oaks are almost 100% dependent on imported water from Los Angeles through the Metropolitan Water District.
- Water revenue for Ventura and Thousand Oaks water services leaves the city to benefit Los Angeles.
- Calleguas Metropolitan Water is our water treatment provider for the city and Ventura County. Its holding reservoir, Lake Bard, has only a 30-day supply of water.
- Were our supply lines from Los Angeles fail in an earthquake, it could be months before water service is returned to normal. This would exhaust Lake Bard’s holding supply.
The creative solution is to place water reserve tanks in the surrounding hills of Thousand Oaks which can be drawn upon if all water is cut off from Los Angeles. Also, a connection with Las Virgenes Water District could allow for the sharing of water in such a disaster.
Also, Dr. McNamee is in clinical practice, board certified in pain management, specializing in acupuncture, chiropractic, Asian and herbal medicine, blended with traditional Western diagnostics and treatment protocols.
Dr. McNamee volunteers his acupuncture and chiropractic clinical services at the Free Clinic at the United Methodist Church to many of the city’s under-served population.
In addition to his practice, Dr. McNamee is a retired reserve Los Angeles Police Department officer but continues to serve as a volunteer to the much appreciated Air Support Division by providing clinical care to the officers. This experience provides insights into crime trends and crime prevention.
Dr. McNamee’s Anti-Drug presentations for middle and high school students have helped thousands of students change their attitudes about illegal drug use and abuse.
There are many challenges facing the city. With the drop in business due to the Covid-19 lock down, many businesses are closed or going out of business never to return. Thousand Oaks’ main source of revenue for the services we enjoy is through sales tax in our local economy.
With the drop-off of business and flow of money in our local economy, fiscal crisis is looming on the horizon. We can weather the storm brewing but it will take leadership from someone with 30 years of business background running successful businesses, a Master’s Degree in business administration, and creative, out-of-the-box problem solving skills.
